Wendera

She’s launched …. she floats …. and she looks beautiful!

Dsc_0076

But let’s start at the beginning of the week … the countdown to the launch of Friday 26th September, had begun.

       Dsc_0186

A list was created for the last of the jobs that needed to be completed in order for Wendera to float.  We then set about to systematically work through the list.

                 Dsc_0188

To finish installing the windows in the starboard side was a priority, as was finishing off the portside windows.

Dsc_0178

The masking from the portside windows was removed to reveal a first glimpse of the finished product.

 Dsc_0193Dsc_0210

Now all that was required was to backfill with Sika.

The final hatches needed to be installed to make Wendera watertight …..

Dsc_0182 Dsc_0184

                 Dsc_0248

Those helping out, will know how much Missy appreciated when Sean installed this hatch ……

 Dsc_0211 Dsc_0212

Final fittings were attached …..

Dsc_0189 Dsc_0199

 Dsc_0255Dsc_0254 Dsc_0361 Dsc_0253

Dsc_0179  Dsc_0180

Chris crafted the trim to  finish the steps.

   Dsc_0245

Work was then done installing the portside windows. Again using the templates for drilling pilot holes required as fixing points, masking up, prepping with primer, attaching the window mounts, positioning the windows in place on the bead of Sika and finally mounting the cleats  to ensure the windows didn’t move while the Sika went off.

Dsc_0289  Dsc_0277

The tabernacle was positioned …..

Dsc_0213 Dsc_0214

The main cabin door was prepped and installed …..

Dsc_0222 Dsc_0227Dsc_0240 Dsc_0238

                    Dsc_0243

Then the sliding window behind the navigation station was installed ….

Dsc_0223Dsc_0225

Both look great and will be really functional in keeping Wendera cool and ventilated …..

      Dsc_0258    Dsc_0257

                  Dsc_0259

The solar panel ventilation fans were installed …..

Dsc_0260 Dsc_0265

 Dsc_0271 Dsc_0272

The “geriatric apprentice” John arrived back in town and was quickly set to work …… (no rest for the wicked!)

       Dsc_0263

This is the wood required to make the mattress frames for the two main cabins.

The propellers were installed and greased ……

Dsc_0273 Dsc_0274

Ian, our expert electrician, connected up more power ……

Dsc_0275 Dsc_0276

Dsc_0278 Dsc_0285

The oven was installed …..

and looks delectable!

         Dsc_0280

Sean and John drilled the holes required to attach the rudder tiller barst ……

                   Dsc_0287

The day before launch …..

It was now time to dismantle the shed, to allow the truck access and to get Wendera out!

             Dsc_0291

             Dsc_0297

             Dsc_0320

The roller door needed to come down …..

             Dsc_0352

            Dsc_0354

Dsc_0355 Dsc_0356

The tender was inflated, and the registration stickers, name (Mooch) and logo were attached ……

                 Dsc_0362

Dsc_0378 Dsc_0380

Dsc_0453

The engine was mounted and given

   a test run ……

 Img_5778

The registration numbers were applied to Wendera …..

Img_5756

Now it was time for Wendera to come out of the shed …..

Dsc_0358

Robert Honey of Marine Transport is an absolute master at this.  He was an expert at manoeuvring the crane – it was almost as if it were part of him.

           Dsc_0363

Large polystyrene blocks were placed under the bridgedeck …..

   Dsc_0401

   Dsc_0402

And out she came …..

    Img_5782

    Dsc_0405

All the while, Paul checking Wendera was OK, from a prime location ……

                  Dsc_0408

Photographers all around to capture the moment …..

Dsc_0413

Dsc_0414

The further she

came out,

the larger she

seemed to be!

The crane arm was again needed to get her over the lip of the shed, to ensure everything was secure and stable.  Again, Robert, the genius, showed his talent.

Dsc_0416 Dsc_0420 Dsc_0429 Dsc_0428

She’s out …..

Dsc_0433

    Dsc_0437

And the shed looks bare …… but ready to build another ……

           Dsc_0440

The crane was used again to remove the polystyrene blocks and place Wendera on the mounts to secure her in place during transport …..

Dsc_0444 Dsc_0445

Dsc_0451 Dsc_0455

And she’s on the trailer …..

           Dsc_0456

The daggerboards were then inserted …..

Dsc_0459

 Dsc_0463 Dsc_0466

And Wendera is ready to go at first light on Friday morning …..

Dsc_0469

               Dsc_0471

So now it’s time to relax (for now) ……

      Dsc_0472

Friday dawns and there is a buzz as friends and family join us to witness the launch of Wendera …..

Dsc_0002 Dsc_0003

Dsc_0004

Final checks are made, and

she is ready ……

Dsc_0006

Dsc_0007

There’s not much room …..

but just enough ……

  Dscf4557

And off she goes, under escort ……

Img_5799  Img_5800

Dsc_0011  Dsc_0015

Dscf4566 Dscf4572

Robert avoided all the overhanging branches and obstacles with ease …..

Dsc_0016

And Wendera arrived at Little Beach for her launch.  Notice the sign, I think we definitely qualify! The weather was perfect ……

Dsc_0018

     Img_5827

Mooch, the dinghy, is launched first …..

Dsc_0024 Img_5833Dsc_0052 Dsc_0061

The boys couldn’t decide if they were going to be on Wendera as she went into the water, but in the end opted to watch from Mooch ……

Dsc_0105

Img_5871  Img_5879

Dsc_0113  Img_5885

The boys, Chris and Lilly hop on board for her maiden voyage ……

          Dsc_0109

Miss waved them off from the pier (busily snapping photos) …… as Wendera set off under motor to the Nelson Bay Marina for the fitting of her mast ……

 Dscf4654 Dscf4659

At the marina, Wendera came along side to have her mast attached ……

        Dsc_0131

Img_5893 Img_5897

Dsc_0168  Dsc_0177

  Dsc_0179   Dsc_0201

Spectators were everywhere …….

           Dsc_0218

With the mast going up, time for a little relaxing …..

Dsc_0237  Dsc_0242

 Wendera was officially christened …..

 Dsc_0255 Dsc_0261

The story is almost complete ……

    Dsc_0266

Dsc_0265 DSC_0035

On Saturday we motored back to Little Beach to release some balloons in honour of the wonderful people who inspired Wendera – Wendy Cochrane and Deran Hood, while two dolphins came along side, it truly felt they were there to watch over and guide Wendera on all her journeys.

Dsc_0011 Dsc_0012 Dsc_0018

Dsc_0027 DSC_0030

Now it’s time to enjoy Wendera ……

  1. Henri Koster Says:

    Well Paul,

It’s great to see that all the hard work you and the ‘family’ have put in to get her launched has finally come to fruition….

We, in Seattle, have been following the (sometimes agonising) tale, with great expectations that we now see have been realised.

Congratulutions to the ‘crew’ – may you always encounter fair skies and fine winds.

    Best wishes,
    Henri, Yvonne & Teresa Koster

  2. Phil Linke Says:

    Paul,

Great work by all! I have been following your adventure from Gig Harbor. I expect to be visiting Newcastle at the end of October. If you haven’t set sail I will stop by. She looks beautiful. Enjoy!

    Phil

It’s like a fairytale with a happy ending!

    Hi Folks and congratulations!!

Six weeks has seemed to last for ever….
but someone once told me, ‘if its easy you aren’t doing it right….’
The results show that while clearly it wasn’t easy, you did it right!!!

She certainly does look beautiful – all the best for the rest of the adventure.

    Cheers

    Jamie

  5. Trev Smith Says:

  6. Brad Bannister Says:

    Hey Guys
Have been following your progress since Ben came into my class in ‘07. I am so pleased you can finally start the adventure of a lifetime. Your trip will provide you with many more learning experiences than you can obtain inside a school ground.
I am inspired by what you are all doing and wish you a safe and happy trip.
    Good luck.
    Mr B
